An aspirant chairman candidate for the Banibaha Union Parishad elections in Rajbari has been shot to death in a violent attack following a political rivalry.

The deceased was Abdul Latif Mia, who was keen to contest the UP election on Awami League ticket.

Latif, president of local Awami League unit, came under the attack when he was heading home from Banibaha market on Thursday, police said.

He was rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds around 3:30am on Friday.

“We’re working to arrest those who were carried out the deadly attack,” a police officer said.

Latif hailed from Pukurchala in Mahishbathan village. He was elected chairman of Banibaha Union Parishad in 2001.

In another incident, at least 25 people were injured in separate clashes over Union Parishad elections among supporters of candidates in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj on Friday.

Over 100 houses were also ransacked during the clashes. The injured are undergoing treatment in local hospitals, police said.
