SI sent to jail for amassing illegal wealth

CHATTOGRAM: A Chattogram court on Wednesday sent a suspended sub-inspector (SI) of Bangladesh Police to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 1.38 crore.

The accused was identified as SI Nawab Ali of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dhaka.

Earlier, the authorities suspended Nawab after filing the case.

The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahaman passed the order after Nawab surrendered before it with bail petition on Wednesday, said ACC Public Prosecutor (PP) Mahmudul Hoque.

The court also rejected the bail prayer submitted for Nawab, said the PP.

Earlier, ACC filed the case against SI Nawab and his wife Gulzar Begum on March 10 in 2019 for earning wealth worth Tk 1.38 crore from unknown sources.

After investigating the case, ACC Deputy Director Ali Akbar of the headquarters submitted charge sheet in the case accusing the couple and two tax officials of Chattogram Tax Office on October 07 in 2020, the PP said.
