CHATTOGRAM: At least 46 shops were gutted in a devastating fire at a market in the city’s Halishahar area on Tuesday.

Sources in the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) department said the fire broke out at ‘Godown Bazar’ near Halishahar Artillery Centre at around 8:45am and spread fast engulfing a total of 46 tin-roofed and semi-pucca shops at the market.

On receiving information, eight firefighting units from different fire stations rushed to the spot and doused the fire at around 11:00am, said the FSCD Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Newton Das.

Causes behind the fire and damages it will be ascertained after investigation, he added.
