Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has said the present government is working ceaselessly to ensure food safety to build a healthy and meritorious nation.

“Ensuring food safety is a must now. The government has taken different initiatives to ensure safe food production, processing, preservation, marketing and food habits. Public awareness can make all the efforts more successful,” he said.

The minister made the comments while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on mass media’s role in raising awareness about Safe Food Act, 2013 at a city hotel on Tuesday.

Sadhan Chandra said that they are going to set up a testing laboratory, one of the largest in Asia, in Narayanganj with the funding of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Speaking on the occasion as the special guest, Secretary of the ministry Dr Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum said, “All stakeholders involved in food production and management will be trained. Extensive programmes have also been undertaken to raise awareness at the field level.”

In his speech, renowned TV personality Shykh Seraj stressed the need for inclusion of safe food topic into primary education.

Daily Sun Executive Editor Rezaul Karim Lotus said there is no control over food quality.

Many food items, especially baby food, which is about to expire is being sold at the superstore, he said, adding that sometimes expire date is tempered or projected on a critical place.

There are many laws in Bangladesh, but there is no enforcement of it, said Lotus.

Bangladesh Food Safety Authority Chairman Md Abdul Kayowm Sarker presided over the programme while Professor of Department of Chemistry at Dhaka University Dr Iqbal Rouf Mamun presented a keynote paper.

Ekattor TV Head of News Bayezid Milky, Banglavision Head of News Masood Kamal, DBC Chief News Editor Pranab Saha, Restaurant Owners Association President Imran Hassan and other journalists spoke at the programme.
