Protests continue

Protests continued in different parts of the country on Sunday against an attempt to assassinate Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

Hundreds of people formed human chains and held protest rallies in the capital, Savar on the outskirts of the city, Chattogram, Chandpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Brahmanbaria districts and other parts of the country.

They demanded that exemplary punishment be meted out to the masterminds of the assassination plot after their arrest.

Foiling an assassination attempt on the Bashundhara Group Managing Director, law enforcers arrested a youth -- Saiful Islam Saad, 23 -- on Friday morning.

During preliminary interrogation, Saad confessed that he was preparing to attack Sayem Sobhan Anvir during Jumma prayers on Friday. Earlier, the youth attempted to poison him death.

The arrestee disclosed that as part of a blueprint orchestrated by Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, also MP from Chattogram-12 constituency (Patiya), and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun, he was supposed to shoot the Bashundhara Group MD to death during Jumma prayers.

In the capital, locals formed a human chain in Vatara in protest against the attempt on the life of the Bashundhara Group Managing Director.

Around 800 people from different walks of life as well as organisations joined the programme held in front of Vatara Police Station.

The participants demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators and masterminds of the heinous plot. Later, they brought a procession in the area.    Speaking at the programme, Md Milon Hossain, a resident of the area, said, “Vatara was once a low-lying area which was developed by Bashundhara Group. We consider Bashundhara Group MD Sayem Sobhan Anvir as our brother. So, we demand exemplary punishment for Whip Shamsul and his son Sharun.”

Another native, Zahidur Rahman Jony, said Sayem Sobhan Anvir is not only the Managing Director of Bashundhara Group but also an asset of the country. “We call upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to beef up his security and bring Whip Shamsul and his son Sharun to justice for masterminding the assassination plot.”

Mosharraf Hossain Khandker, a resident of Vatara, said Whip Shamsul and Sharun assigned a youth to kill the Bashundhara Group MD and the duo should be arrested and punished.

In Chandpur, a protest rally and human chain was held demanding arrest of those involved in the attempt to murder the Bashundhara Group MD.

The protest rally was held at Matlab upazila parishad complex in the morning with the participation of freedom fighters, journalists, businessmen, teachers and other sections of people.

Matlab Uttar Press Club General Secretary Monirul Islam Monir and Naem Miazi, among others, spoke at the event.

Another similar programme was held in Matlab Dakkhin upazila in the morning.

In Rajshahi, a human chain was formed in the city’s Shahebbazar Zero Point in the morning protesting the assassination attempt on the Bashundhara Group MD.

The participants demanded immediate arrest of the plotters.

Businessmen Babu, Jewel, Shakil, Halim and Faruk, among others, spoke on the occasion.

In Mymensingh, people from different sections formed a human chain in Nandail upazila in the morning protesting the assassination attempt.

The hour-long programme was held in front of the main gate of Govt Shaheed Smriti Adarsha College around 11:00am. Later, they held a protest rally and brought out a procession in the area.

Nandail Press Club President Hannan Mahmud, General Secretary Md Enamul Haque Nabul, acting Principal of Govt Shaheed Smriti Ardasha College Badal Chandra Dutt, senior journalists Fazlur Haque Bhuiyan, Jalal Uddin Mandal and Abu Hanif Sarkar, human rights activist Md Saidur Rahman and businessman Aminul Islam Khayes, among others, took part in the human chain.

In Brahmanbaria, people held a rally in Bancharampur upazila protesting the assassination attempt on the Bashundhara Group MD.

Presided over by former General Secretary of Bancharampur upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Ataur Rahman Sonnet, the event was attended by upazila Awami League Organising Secretary and Ujanchar union parishad Chairman Kazi Jadid Al Rahman Jony, upazila AL Joint General Secretary Kabir Hossain, Organising Secretary AKM Shahidul Haque Babul, Cultural Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Ujjal, municipality AL Vice-president Anwar Hossain and former upazila BCL President Zakir Hossain, former convener Alamgir Hossain, former President Nasir Uddin Nasim, former General Secretary Ruhul Amin Tipu, former General Secretary Selim Mia and Chhalimabad union AL President Asaduzzaman Bakul.

The participants demanded immediate arrest of the plotters.

They said it is not enough to arrest just one person -- the masterminds behind the plot and the real culprits should be arrested immediately.

In Chattogram, the business community condemned the attempt to assassinate the Bashundhara Group Managing Director.

They termed the attempt heinous and demanded that exemplary punishment be meted out to the culprits.

Mahbubul Alam, president of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), former Director of FBCCI and Managing Director of Seacom Group Amirul Haque and Mohammad Nasir, former vice-president of BGMEA, among others, spoke on the issue.

Bangladesh Jewellers Samity (BAJUS) strongly condemned and protested the assassination attempt on Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

Earlier on Saturday, protest rallies and human chains took place in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, Brahmanbaria, Tangail, Narsingdi and Sylhet against the murder plot.

The demonstrators demanded arrest of the whip and his son Sharun for masterminding the plan.
