At least nine people died in separate road accidents in Cumilla, Habiganj and Mymensingh on Tuesday.

In Cumilla, four people, including a couple, died when a Dhaka-bound bus hit their battery-run auto-rickshaw on Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway in Bipulasar Bihra area of Manoharganj upazila around 10am.

Three of the deceased were identified as Saima Muntaha, 22, Ruhul Amin, 65, and his wife Sefali Akhter, 55. All of them hailed from Saikchail village of the upazila.

Masudur Rahman, who is in-charge of Laksam Highway Crossing police outpost, said the Dhaka-bound Ekushey Paribahan bus rammed into the auto-rickshaw while overtaking it. The couple died on the spot while Saima Muntaha died on the way to hospital.

Earlier in the morning, a newspaper-carrying microbus collided with a truck on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Kalakochua in Burichang upazila, leaving microbus driver Liton Mia, 55, from Brahmanbaria, dead on the spot.

In Habiganj, two people died in separate incidents.

Rahul Talukder, 17, a rising footballer, was killed when a private car carrying him plunged into a ditch on Habiganj-Baniachong Road. Rahul was an inhabitant at Jalalabad village in Sadar upazila. He used to play for Arambagh Club in Dhaka.

Officer-in-Charge of Baniachong Thana Projit Kumar Das said the accident occurred in Kalardoba area as the driver of the private car lost control of the vehicle. Striker Rahul Talukder died on the spot. Two others were also injured in the accident.

On the other hand, a one-and-half-year old baby boy died at Sharifabad Upazila in Habiganj at around 11am when he was crushed under the wheels of his father’s microbus.

The deceased is Omar Faruk, son of Alamgir Hossain. Witnesses said Alamgir Hossain, a microbus driver, was parking his vehicle at the home yard while his son was playing on the yard.    

The injured baby was taken immediately to Habiganj District Sadar Hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

In Mymensingh, two brothers were killed after a covered van hit their motorcycle in Kazi Shimla Dulalbari area on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 7:30am.

The deceased were Firoz Mia, 32, and Jihad Ahmed, 25, of Kharkharia area in Jamalpur Sadar upazila.

Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Main Uddin said both the brothers died on the spot.

“We have recovered the bodies and seized the covered van. However, the driver managed to flee,” he added.
