Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has launched an emergency department for the first time in 24 years of its operation.
BSMMU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed inaugurated the emergency department in its cabin block on Monday.
“Initially, this emergency department has started the journey with 100 beds. We have a plan to upgrade it to 300 beds through increasing 200 more beds by the next six months, if necessary,” the BSMMU vice-chancellor told the Daily Sun.
At least one doctor from each department will remain present at the unit to provide emergency treatment for patients, he said.
“There’s no alternative to the general emergency department to take forward medical education, services and research activities,” Sharfuddin said.
The launch of the emergency department was the outcome of a long-awaited move, he said, adding that although it was supposed to be launched earlier, it was not possible due to the coronavirus pandemic.
BSMMU, country’s first medical university, thus far has an outdoor department but no emergency department.
