Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) unearthed a racket involved in selling and renting out black walkie-talkie sets illegally.
A team of RAB-10 came to know about the illegal business after arresting five members of the racket. They also seized 317 black walkie-talkies from their possessions.
Additional DIG of police Mahfuzur Rahman, also commanding officer (CO) of the elite force unit, briefed this to reporters at RAB media centre in Karwan Bazar on Sunday.
The arrestees are Mehedi Hasan, 27, Sadik Hasan, 26, Mohammad Faisal, 23, Talibur Rahman, 24 and Faruk Hasan, 59.
Some 116 mobile phone sets and 5,244 different things were also seized from them.
As per instructions issued by BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission), only the government offices can use black walkie-talkies, said the officer.
The members of the racket sold and rented out 1,150 walkie-talkie sets to various people, including criminals last year, he revealed.
According to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Act-2001’s Section 55(3), anybody planning to import walkie-talkie sets needs to take licence from BTRC. Moreover, the importers can import different colored walkie-talkies except the black colored set. But the arrestees did not do so.
They have been importing black walkie-talkie sets, selling and renting out those for the last one year, said the officer.
Regarding the mobile sets, the officer said that the sets were collected through illegal means.
Our drives are on to arrest the other members of the racket, he added.
A case is underway.
