2 arrested over CMC clash

CHATTOGRAM: Two accused were arrested in the case filed in connection with the clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Chittagong Medical College (CMC) campus on Saturday.

Brother of an injured filed the case with the Panchlaish Police Station on Saturday night.

The arrestees were identified as Raktim and Simanto. They are second year students of the MBBS course.

A faction of the BCL also staged demonstration on the campus demanding punishment to those involved in the attack.

On the other hand, injured Mahadi J Akib, also a second year student, is undergoing treatment at the Incentive Care Unit (ICU) of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). His condition is critical. The student sustained severe injuries in his skull and brain.

Assistant Professor Mahfuzul Kader of the CMCH said the damage in his skull and brain was severe.

Akib’s father Mizanur Rahman, brother Toufiqur Rahman and other family members were waiting outside the ICU. They requested all to pray for Akib so that he recovers soon.

Akib hailed from Burichang upazila in Cumilla district.

Mentionable, the CMC was declared closed sine die following sporadic clashes between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the college campus on Saturday.

The college authority also asked the students to leave the residential halls by the evening and formed a five-member committee to investigate the matter. The two factions of the BCL reportedly loyal to Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel and former City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin clashed over establishing supremacy at the Mail Hostel of the college on Friday night.

They swooped on each other with batons at that time. The feuding groups also clashed on Saturday morning over the issue leaving at least three students injured.

Akib’s brother Toufiqur Rahman filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station on Saturday night.
