The long wait of the people of southern districts for a direct road link with the capital Dhaka is likely to end shortly as asphalt carpeting on the roadway slabs of Padma Bridge has started.
After fishing the roadway carpeting in the viaducts, asphalt carpeting began from the end of last week in the presence of Project Director Shafiqul Islam. “Carpeting is now underway in full swing. The work of asphalt carpeting on the main bridge has also started, which will take three to four months. Moreover, other work has got a boost as well,” he said.
The steel truss bridge will have two decks--- the lower deck for railway and the upper deck for road transport. The roadway is being built with the help of concrete slabs on the steel structure. Installation of all the road slabs has been completed on August 23.
After carpeting, the bridge will be ready for vehicular movement. After a long delay, the government eyes to complete the main bridge construction work by June next year.
By this time, project engineers will have to complete other works like construction of parapet wall, road divider, painting and installing street lights and other utility services.
The carpeting work on the main bridge started at least a week earlier with the start of the dry season even though Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader announced early this month that the work will start from the first week of November.
“The work of Padma bridge is not like other projects and all the work is being done in such a way so that no allegations are raised. “All the work is being done very meticulously,” the project director stated.
