The Anti-Terrorism Unit of police arrested five members of the banned militant group Ansar al-Islam during raids in different areas of the capital and Dhaka district on Friday.

The five arrestees are Md Mithun Rahman, 29, Shakib Al Hasan, 19, Md Abdus Shukur, 21, Md Jaber, 25, and Md Omar Farooq, 19.

According to a press release issued by the Anti-Terrorism Unit, an ATU team raided the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and first arrested Mithun. An Android mobile phone and five jihadi books were seized from him. He is a second-year student of Bangladesh Open University.

On the basis of the information given by Mithun during interrogation, ATU arrested Shakib in Hazratpur area of Keraniganj Model Police Station in Dhaka. An Android phone and two books were also seized from him.

Later, according to the information given by Mithun and Shakib, the other three were arrested.
