Goons in uniform active to prey on targets

6 gangsters arrested

Organised gangs of criminals under the guise of detectives are roaming around different streets in the capital and on its outskirts, including Savar, Ashulia, Keraniganj, Tongi and Kanchpur, to prey on their targets.

Such gangsters wearing fake police uniforms, carrying firearms, walkie-talkies and handcuffs are picking up many targeted persons and looting their valuables, including cash, mobile phone sets, gold ornaments.

The armed goons lie in wait at different strategic points and taking the advantage of the situation, they swoop on their targets and flee with the booty, detective sources said.

Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members have arrested six gangsters from Paschim Rajashan of Savar on charges of committing robbery wearing police uniform.

The arrestees are Shamim Reza, Helal Uddin, Parvez, Wasim Islam, Nayeem Khan and Ferdous Ahmed Raju.

Two police uniforms, police jackets, police belts, fake police ID cards, a walkie-talkie, handcuffs with a cover, a pistol, one bullet, a fake pistol, a heaver, a knife, a chapati, rope, 5 litres of distilled liquor, 48 Yaba pills, 1.5 kg cannabis, 6 grams of heroin, 19 handsets, Tk 44,000 and 580 rupees were also recovered from their possession.

RAB-4 Commanding Officer Additional DIG Mozammel Haque revealed the information at a press conference at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar of the capital on Friday.

In the face of RAB interrogation, the arrestees confessed that they stop cars in Savar and Ashulia areas in the dark of night wearing fake police uniform and loot money, gold ornaments, mobile phone sets and other valuables from passengers.

“Arrested Shamim Reza used to introduce himself as a sub-inspector (SI). He used to carry a firearm, a police uniform, a walkie-talkie and a fake ID card. He was using these fake clothes and ID card of the police to cheat and extort money from the common people,” the RAB official said.

The arrestees are wanted in several cases filed with different police stations, including Savar, on charges of possessing arms and drugs, and snatching.

Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Faruq Hossain on Friday said,   “As the armed gangsters are posing themselves as detectives and looking like real detectives, innocent people are usually falling prey to them and losing their belongings.

“In the wake of such reported incidents, several detective teams are now moving on different streets in the capital and its nearby areas to catch these organised gangs of criminals,” he said.

The Detective Branch of police has recently arrested 16 such fake DB men with firearms, police uniform, handcuffs, walkie-talkies from the capital’s Banasree and Shahbagh areas.

The recovered arms and equipment include three vehicles, three foreign pistols, two pipe guns with three magazines, five DB jackets, a wireless set, five handcuffs and five bullets and some knives.

According to DB sources, about 10-12 such groups are operating in the capital and on its outskirts and using false identities of law enforcers to abduct people for ransom.

The gangsters introducing themselves as detectives are trapping many innocent people as well as businessmen and realising handsome money from them, the sources said.
