Bashundhara Foundation has provided the 58th series of interest-free loans to the poor at Durgarampur in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria as part of its efforts to support the country’s underprivileged communities.

A total of Tk 70 lakh in loans was distributed among 570 ultra-poor and disadvantaged people during a ceremony in the upazila on Thursday.

The loan disbursement ceremony was presided over by East West Media Group Limited (EWMGL) Publisher Maynal Hossain Chowdhury. EWMGL Director Imdadul Haq Milan attended the function as the chief guest.

Founded by Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, the non-profit organisation has been distributing interest-free loans among the poor without any service charge since 2005. Bashundhara Foundation started its interest-free loan scheme in Bancharampur upazilas and gradually expanded it to Homna and Nabinagar upazilas. The amount of the loan has also been increased to Tk 10,000 from the previous Tk 5,000.

Speaking on the occasion, Imdadul Huq Milan said Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan is facilitating interest-free loans to provide financial assistance to the ultra-poor people of Brahmanbaria.

“The loan is meant for women who are investing the money in 32 sectors including poultry, dairy and greens farming,” he said.

Maynal Hossain Chowdhury said the main objective of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan’s interest-free loan is to build a society free from poverty and starvation.

“Bashundhara Group is working for the welfare of the country and its people while the Bashundhara Foundation is working for economic empowerment of the ultra-poor and disadvantaged group in the society,” he said.

Hanufa Begum, one of the loan recipients, said “My husband bought bamboos and other materials with the money and made fishing nets. We have hugely benefited from the interest-free loan of Bashundhara Foundation.”

Appreciating the loan scheme, a female college student of Durgarampur village said she purchased a sewing machine with the money. “The loan has enabled me to meet my education cost and help my parents at the same time,” she said.

Bashundhara Foundation deputy general manager Md Maimun Kabir, Bashundhara Group Bancharampu branch deputy chief engineer Md Shafiqul Islam, Bashundhara Foundation manager Mosharaf Hossain, the daily Kaler Kantho’s social organisation Shuvasangha director Zakaria Jaman, and Bancharampur municipality Awami League vice-president Md Anwar Hossain were present, among others, at the loan disbursement function.
