Economist Dr Reza Kibria and former Vice-president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur have floated a new political party named ‘Gono Adhikar Parishad’.

Nur made the announcement of their political party at a programme at its temporary headquarters in Purana Paltan in the capital on Tuesday noon.

He said their party’s slogan will be “Janatar Adhikar, Amader Ongikar” (People’s rights, our promises).

Dr Reza Kibria, son of former Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria, has been made convener of the party while Nur member secretary. Rashed Khan, Faruq Hasan, Sohrab Hossain, Abu Hanif and Mahfuzur Rahman Khan have been made joint conveners of the party.

Most of the leaders of the newly floated party are central leaders of Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad (Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council), which spearheaded the quota reform movement.

“The 86-member convening committee has been formed initially and the full-fledged committee will be announced after a few days,” Reza Kibria told the Daily Sun.

Nur said the four main principles of the party are democracy, justice, rights and public interests. “Our party will run its activities based on these four principles,” he said.

Joint Convener Rashed Khan read out the principles and goals of the party at the programme.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Muktijuddho Mancha has demanded that the government ban the newly floated party and arrest Nur and Reza Kibria on charges of patronising communal attacks.

The Mancha leaders made the demand during a siege to the Shahbagh intersection in the capital in the afternoon, just after the announcement of the new political party.

They also held a protest rally at the intersection.

Addressing the rally, Muktijuddho Mancha President Aminul Islam alleged that under the patronage of Reza Kibria and Nur, leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad and Bangladesh Jubo Adhikar Parishad carried out an attack on the puja mandap at JM Sen Hall in Chattogram in a planned way and police arrested 10 of them in this connection.

“We demand that militant and terror organisations Gono Adhikar Parishad, Chhatra and Jubo Adhikar Parishad be banned for leading the communal attacks at different parts of the country. We also demand arrest and exemplary punishment of Reza Kibria and Nurul Haque Nur for patronising the communal attacks,” he added.

Mancha General Secretary Al Mamun and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad Joint Secretary General Prof Dr Uttam Kumar Barua also spoke at the programme.
