The Forest Department  rescued a total of 28 birds and mongooses from a bird market in the city’s Mirpur-1 area on Friday morning.

A drive of Wildlife Division led by wildlife inspector Nigar Sultana in association with Rab-4 arrested 10 people in this connection. 

Wildlife inspector Nigar said they rescued 23 birds-- nine parrots, two mynas, six doves, two starlings, and four Lonchuras and 5 mongooses.

Rab-4 executive magistrate Md Anisur Rahman fined the arrestees Tk 2, 47,500   under 34 (Kha) section of Bangladesh Wildlife (Protection and Safety) Act 2012.

As per the act, trapping, selling, buying, consuming or caging wild birds is a punishable offence.

Later, the birds were released to the Botanical Garden at Mirpur at noon.
