Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Thursday said attacks on Hindus in Cumilla and its aftermath actually mean the hit on the government.

“Attacks on Hindus across the country, including Cumilla, are actually equivalent to hit on the government. It is in not only an attack on the people of Hindu community, but also a hit on the spirit of Bangladesh,” he said. Hasan, also an Awami League joint general secretary, made the comment while addressing a view exchange meeting at his secretariat in the capital.

The minister came up with the remark as tensions escalated across the country following an incident of alleged ‘demeaning of the Holy Quran’ at a Puja Mandap in Cumilla. Following the incident, attacks were carried out on puja mandaps, temples, houses, and business establishments belonging to the Hindu community in different districts, including Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and Rangpur.

Calling upon all to remain alert to possibilities of violence provoked by the evil forces, the AL spokesperson said it seems that the perpetrators are in hideout for the time being but they carry out attacks anytime.

“The attacks on Hindus were carried out to destroy the relations between incumbent government of Bangladesh and neighbouring India and its people,” he said.

The minister said the incidents that took place in recent days were stray incidents and carried out by miscreants.

“However, they can carry out such incidents more. I don’t think their conspiracy has stopped,” he said.
