Big three start with victory

Defending Champions Mohammedan Sporting Club, Club Cup champions Mariner Young’s Club and Abahani Limited won their respective matches on the opening day of the much-awaited  Premier Division Hockey at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.

 Riding on a hat-trick by local star Fazle Hossain Rabbi, Mariners outplayed Bangladesh Police by 6-1 goals in the first match.

 Sohanur Rahman, Hridoy, Milon Hossain netted one each for the winning side while Abdul Malek netted the consolation goal for Police.

 In the day’s second match, Mainul Islam Koushik handed the star-studded Mohammedan SC a massive 10-0 win over Dilkusha Sporting Club. The national star scored four goals along with a hat-trick while captain Rasel Mahmud Jimmy, Nasir Hossain and Ashraful Islam contributed two goals each.

 In the third match, Abahani Ltd beat Azad SC by 6-0 goals. Abahani’s key player Mahbub Hossain scored four goals with a hat-trick Hasan Zubayer Niloy added two for the winners.

 Meanwhile, the BHF invited three foreign umpires to conduct the matches in the ongoing league.

 Among them, Sri Lankan umpire Dashnayek, who arrived in Dhaka on Monday, conducted the day’s first match between Mariners and Police.

 This year, a total of 12 teams are participating in the league which is taking place after 2018. The top five teams will reach the next phase - super five - which will begin on November 18.
