Bangladesh U-19 team conceded a heartbreaking one-run defeat against their Sri Lankan counterparts in the second match and went 0-2 down in the five-match youth one-day international series at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla on Monday.
Chasing a target of 229 runs, Bangladesh were well on course to the victory as they reached 181-4 but Sri Lankan bowlers fought back strongly in the match and bowled the visitors all out for 227 runs in 49.3 overs.
Bangladesh number 10 Ashikur Zaman (11 not out) then smashed two boundaries in the last few balls of Bangladesh innings to make the equation two off four balls but Ripon Mondol was run out in the next ball which shattered their hopes of winning the match.
Opener Mahfijul Islam top-scored for Bangladesh with 75 off 96 balls while another opener Iftikher Hossain made 36 runs for the visitors.
For Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage and Matheesha Pathirana claimed three wickets each. Earlier, Sri Lanka posted 228-8 in their stipulated overs with Sadeesh Jayawardena and Pawan Pathiraja making 58 and 51 runs respectively after they elected to bat first.
The third match of the series will take place at the same venue on Wednesday.
