Left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam stole the limelight on the opening day of the 23rd National Cricket League as he finished with the career-best of 6-23 in the first innings against Sylhet Division to take his side Dhaka Division on top in their tier-1 first-round match in Sylhet on Sunday.

Other spinners - Tanvir Islam, Mehidy Hasan and Nayeem Hasan also shone with the ball for their respective sides on the first day of the NCL, which marked the return of domestic cricket in the country after six months.

Dhaka VS Sylhet

Nazmul was also well supported by all-rounder Shuvagata Hom, who claimed 3-18 as Dhaka bowled Sylhet all out for only 67 runs in just 22 overs in their first innings after Sylhet elected to bat first at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground.

Dhaka nearly witnessed a similar batting collapse as they were reduced to 72-6 but then Shuvagata and Mahidul Islam Ankon scored 50 and 47 runs respectively before they were bowled out for 176 runs in 41 overs and took a 109-run first innings lead.

Sylhet’s veteran left-arm spinner Enamul Haque jnr claimed 4-66 while pacer Ebadot Hossain picked up three wickets.

Sylhet finished the day on 35-1 in their second innings as they still trailed by 74 runs against Dhaka.

Rangpur VS Khulna

In the other tier-1 match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Rangpur Division managed to finish the day on 226-8 after they elected to bat first against Khulna Division.

Jahid Javed and Mahmudul Hasan scored 40 and 34 runs respectively for Rangpur while Khulna’s Mehidy and Al-Amin Hossain picked up four and three wickets respectively.

Dhaka Metro VS Barishal

Meanwhile, in tier-2, Barishal Division finished the day on 6-1 as they still trailed by 233 runs against Dhaka Metropolis at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground in Cox’s Bazar.

Dhaka Metro earlier were bowled out for 239 runs in their first innings with skipper Shadman Islam and Sharifullah making 75 and 59 runs respectively after Barishal sent them to bat first.

Left-arm spinner Tanvir finished with 6-78 while pacer Kamrul Islam picked up 4-43 for the Barishal.

Chattogram VS Rajshahi

In the other tier-2 match, Chattogram Division trailed by 40 runs against Rajshahi Division as they finished the first day on 126-2 after bowling the opposition for 166 runs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Yasir Ali remained unbeaten on 70 runs while skipper Mominul Haque made 32 not out for Chattogram.

Earlier, off-spinner Nayeem finished with 4-42 for Chattogram as Rajshahi were bowled out in just 41.3 overs after Chattogram sent them to bat first.

Towhid Hridoy made the highest 68 runs for Rajshahi.
