4 killed in Magura UP polls violence

At least four people were killed and 20 others injured in a clash between two rival groups  on Friday, centering on the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) election in Magura Sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Rahman Mollah, 55, Sabuj Mollah, 52, Kabir Mollah, 50, and Imran Hossain, 25.

Police said a clash broke out between supporters of two groups around 4pm for establishing dominance.

According to the locals, Nazrul Islam is the current UP member of ward no 3 of Jagdal union. However, in the upcoming UP election, Nazrul Islam’s political opponent Sabuj Mollah has got the nomination.

Tensions had been simmering in the area for the past three days as Sabuj Mollah and his rival Nazrul Islam contesting for the same post in the UP elections.

Magura district Superintendent of Police Jahirul Islam told the journalists that the bodies were sent to the morgue for autopsy and the injured were taken to Magura 250-bed Hospital.

Additional police were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control, he added.

A case has been filed with Magura police station in this regard. No arrests have been made so far, he said.

Mentionable, elections for 369 UPs have been held in the first phase while elections for 848 UPs will be held on November 11 in the second phase.

And, the third phase of election in 1,007 union parishads and the eighth phase of polls in 10 municipalities is scheduled to be held on 28 November.

At present, there are 4,483 union parishads in the country. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the EC could not arrange any election in the unions where the tenure of chairman and councillor has expired.

Election Commission will complete the elections for all the UPs by December this year.
