At least 20 people including five policemen were injured in police-musallis clash over Cumilla incident near Kakrail intersection in the capital on Friday.

The protesters hurled stones and brickbats at the policemen while they (policemen) charged batons, fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse them.

Chase and counter-chase took place between the police and protesters turning the Kakrail and its nearby areas a battlefield, witness said.

Sajjad Hossain, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Ramna division, said, "Five policemen were injured in the clash. Three attackers have been detained from the scene."

Witnesses said the clash took place when the protesters in large number brought out a protest procession over alleged desecrating Islam in Cumilla from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Juma prayers and started marching towards Kakrail.

As the policemen intercepted the protesters, they threw brickbats at police from the march while police charged batons, teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse them.

The procession then spread to the surrounding alleys.

Traffic on the road was halted during the clash. Soon, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members also arrived at the spot.

Additional police and RAB personnel were deployed at different strategic points in the capital to check the situation from getting worse.
