Chicken prices skyrocket in city markets

Prices of all types of chickens and eggs have skyrocketed in the city markets adding financial burden to the low-income people.

Broiler, Sonali chickens and farmed egg are the key protein sources for low-income group, but they cannot buy it for its higher prices.

While visiting several kitchen markets in the capital on Friday it was seen that price of broiler chicken was  Tk 185-195 per kg while it was Tk 175-180 per kg a week earlier, Tk 165-170 per kg two week earlier and TK120-130 per kg on the first week of September.

Sonali chicken was selling at Tk 330-350 per kg on Friday while it was 320-3400 per kg a week earlier. It was Tk 230-240 per kg four weeks earlier.

However, price of layer chicken was stable and it was sold at Tk 200-220 per kg while it was TK220-230 per kg in the last four weeks.

The price of farm eggs was Tk110-120 per dozen same as the previous high price while it was Tk 90-95 four weeks earlier.

Rafik Hossain, a chicken trader at Mohammadpur Krishi Market said supply of chicken is low compared to the demand for this price of the farm chicken is high.

“Restaurants, marriage ceremonies and similar social programmes have increased in the country soon after withdrawal of lockdown. The price may reduce a month later when new lot of chicken will come,” he said.

Meanwhile, price of onion has decline by Tk10 per kg in a week and sold at TK 65-70 per kg.

While visiting vegetable market it was seen that price of tomato was Tk 100-140 per kg and carrot was Tk 120-160 per kg same as the previous week’s high price.

Bean was selling at Tk  80-100 per kg  while it was Tk129-140 per kg a week earlier, ribbed gourd price was Tk 40-50 per kg while it was Tk 60-70 a kg a week earlier and cauliflower and cabbage was sold at Tk 30-50 per piece.

Bitter guard was at Tk 60-70  per kg and snake gourd was Tk 50-60 per kg, okra was sold at TK 40-60 per kg yardlong bean price was Tk 80-90 a kg and pointed guard  was Tk 50-60 per kg same high as the previous week price.

Green banana was selling at Tk30-35 per four pieces, red amaranth retailed at Tk 10-20 per bunch, radish leaves at Tk 15-20 per bunch and water spinach was selling at Tk 10 per bunch.
