Wari clinch Sheikh Russel U-18 Gold Cup title

Wari Thana emerged champions beating Tejgaon Thana by 4-2 goals in a tie-breaker as their final match of Sheikh Russel Gold Cup U-18 Football Tournament was locked at 1-1 in the stipulated 70-minute at the crowed-packed Bir Shrestha Shaheed Sepoy Mustofa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur in the capital on Friday. 

The tournament was jointly organised by Dhaka Metropolitan Sheikh Russel Shishu-Kishore Parishad and Saif PowerTec Ltd to mark the birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

In the day’s match, Tajowar Bin Kashem took lead for Tejgaon in the 11th minute, later Sujon equalised the margin for Wari in the 47th minute of the game. The match went on a tie-breaker as both teams remained goalless during the extra time (10+10 minutes).

An unexpected incident occurred among the supporters in the gallery during the game, but the law enforcement agencies and organisers controlled the situation immediately.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, MP witnessed the final of the tournament and later distributed the prizes among the winners as the chief guest.

The champions were awarded by Tk 2 lakh while runners-up by Tk 1 lakh.
