Aich Mollah’s heroic knock of 86 off 93 balls went in vain as Bangladesh U-19 team lost to their Sri Lankan counterparts by 42 runs in the opening match of the five-match YODI series at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla on Friday.

Aich, who came to bat at number four, struck nine fours in his innings before he became the last batsman to get dismissed as Bangladesh were bowled out for 186 runs in 46.2 overs after the hosts set up a target of 229 runs.

Earlier, Sri Lanka U-19 team, which elected to bat first, made 228-9 in their stipulated 50 overs after Pawan Pathiraja made the highest 67 off 88 balls.

Pacer duo Ripon Mondol and Ashikur Zaman claimed three and two wickets respectively for the visitors.

Bangladesh were reduced to 35-4 in the run-chase but Aich and Ariful Islam (38) put up a 70-run stand for the fifth wicket to bring their side back in the contest.

However, after the fall of Ariful, no other batsman could give Aich enough support from the other hand as they were bowled out with 22 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka’s Treveen Mathew finished with 4-29 in the innings.

The second match will take place on Monday at the same venue.
