Leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh have demanded immediate arrest and severe punishment for those who desecrated the Holy Quran in Cumilla.
They raised the demand at a meeting of its ‘khas committee’ held at the office of the secretary general in the capital’s Khilgaon area Thursday.
Hefazat leaders said, “We are keeping a close watch on the incident in Cumilla. Islam-loving ‘touhidi’ people of this country won’t tolerate any insult to the Holy Quran. We’ve already learned that the government has closed the puja mandap at Nanuar Dighi in Cumilla and arrested some criminals accused of insulting the Quran.
“We’d like to thank the government for arresting those who desecrated the Quran. At the same time, there should be a proper investigation into whether there was any provocation in the Chandpur incident and how three people died. Law enforcement agencies should also be investigated whether they were at fault.
“We also appeal to all the Islam-loving people of the country, leaders and activists of all levels of Hefazat and scholars and students of Qawmi Madrasas not to take any decision at the instigation of anyone.
“We are observing the situation closely. If necessary, strict course of action will be announced jointly in Sha Allah.”
The meeting was presided over by Allama Ataullah Hafezi which was attended, among others, by Secretary General Allama Nurul Islam, Principal Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, Maulana Muhibbul Haque Gachbari, Maulana Abdul Awal, Maulana Mohiuddin Rabbani, Maulana Abdul Qayyum Subhani and Maulana Zahurul Islam.
