Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has said the much-anticipated road development work in the new 18 wards under the corporation will begin in November.

“We will start the development work of at least one road in each of the 18 wards by November 20,” he said. The mayor gave the information while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a newly constructed road in Kamarpara area on Thursday.

Atiqul said, “Most of the roads in the new 18 wards are in poor shape and residents are suffering from the problem. We have selected one road, which are in the urgent need of development, from each of 18 wards. Bangladesh Army will implement the work.”

They could start the development work of other infrastructures after getting the money from the government, he said.

“We need a total of Tk 26,000 crore to implement the development plan for new wards.  But the government has approved a budget of Tk 4,200 crore and of which we have got only Tk 90 crore. Considering the public sufferings, we have allocated Tk 5 crore to each of the wards for development of a road,” said Atiqul.

The mayor said solving waterlogging problem in the wards by constructing roads and drains was the high priority of DNCC.

“Residents of the wards have been suffering from waterlogging for long.  It is now a big challenge for us to solve the problem. But we cannot solve the problem by constructing only roads, we have to construct drains at the same time because the road will sustain damage without a drainage system,” Atiqul said.

The DNCC mayor warned the people not to grab canals in the new 18 wards.

“I am requesting the people not to do the illegal activities. Please check the cadastral survey and revisional survey map before developing any land. We conduct our demolition drive without serving prior notice to the grabbers,” he added.

About the newly constructed road at ward no 54, he said, “We have constructed Kamarpara road stretching from Kamarpara Graveyard to Bamnartek Main Road and from Razzak Member Bari to Star School. We have allocated Tk 5.90 crore for the 1.6km-long and 16 feet wide road from the revenue budget.
