Take immediate steps to send back Rohingyas

CHATTOGRAM: Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury on Wednesday called upon international community to take immediate steps in repatriation of the persecuted Rohingyas.

Rezaul Karim made the call while US Ambassador Earl R Miller made a courtesy call on him at his office on Wednesday.

The mayor said Bangladesh is a densely populated country and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave shelter to Rohingyas on humanitarian ground.

“The Rohingya problem is extremely embarrassing for us. The only solution to this crisis is quick repatriation of them to their homeland with proper dignity and recognition,” he observed.

Responding to a question about the corona situation, Rezaul said Covid-19 pandemic could be tackled due to the prudence and foresightedness of the Prime Minister.

“Though corona situation is still present, its infection rate is declining. More than 20 percent people of the country have already been vaccinated and the government is hopeful of vaccinating 80 percent people by next March,” said Mayor Rezaul.

He thanked the US administration for its overall cooperation, including supply of the vaccines.

The mayor said Chattogram is now becoming a global asset due to the sincere interest of the prime minister.

The tunnel beneath the river Karnaphuli is going to turn Chattogram into ‘One City Two Town’. Besides, if the railway is extended to Cox's Bazar, the gateway to China will be opened through the Myanmar, he said.

The economic zones at Mirsarai and South Chattogram will show signs of industrialisation while the entire Chattogram will shine in the tourism industry, said the mayor stressing the need for foreign investment at the economic zones and public-private partnership (PPP).
