Dr Yunus gets bail on surrender

A Dhaka labour court on Tuesday granted bail to Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three other top officials of the organisation in a case filed on charges of violating labour laws.

Judge (in-charge) Md Moonzurul Imam of the Labour Court-3 passed the order after Dr Yunus surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case.

The three other accused are Grameen Telecom Managing Director Ashraful Hasan and two directors --Nur Jahan Begum and Mohammad

Shahjahan.  The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) Inspector SM Arifuzzaman filed the case on September 9 and the court had summoned the four accused to appear before the court by October 12.

According to the case, a team of DIFE inspected the office of Grameen Telecom in the capital’s Mirpur and reported violation of labour laws including not regularising 101 staffs and not establishing a welfare fund for the labourers.

Besides, five percent of the company’s dividends were supposed to be paid to the workers but it was not paid to them, it added.
