Nizamul made new chairman of Press Council

The government has appointed retired Appellate Division justice Md Nizamul Haque as the chairman of the Bangladesh Press Council.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on Monday about his appointment as per The Press Council Act, 1984.

He will serve as the Chairman of Bangladesh Press Council for the next three years from the date of joining on condition of resignation from other organisations, the notification reads.

Nizamul Haque was appointed as chairman of ICT-1 on March 25 in 2010 for holding trials of those accused of 1971 war crimes. He was a treasurer and lawyer for the Bangladesh human rights organisation Odhikar before joining the High Court.

Haque was first appointed a justice of the High Court by President Shahabuddin Ahmed, the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He was reappointed to the High Court by President Zillur Rahman, on March 24, 2009.
