Former Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza and Bangladesh football team skipper might feature in the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Cup which was inaugurated at a city hotel in the capital on Monday.
Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal, selector Habibul Bashar and volleyball player Harshit Biswas will be actively campaigning for the event.
The Mayor Cup will be held in three disciplines - football, cricket and volleyball this year. A total of 54 wards from DNCC will compete in the football and cricket tournament, a citizen living in any of these wards can play for his respective locality in this tournament.
Every three wards will form a volleyball team that makes a total of 18 teams to battle it out for the trophy of the volleyball tournament.
The matches will begin from November 15. The theme of this sports carnival is “get busy in sports, stay away from drugs”.
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said: “National players will actively take part in the tournament while eight amateur players along with three free players will also participate.”
“Sporting activities will refrain the youth from drugs and crimes. We are starting the Mayor’s Cup with three events. The Mayor’s Cup will be held next year in a bigger way,” he said.
