International Day of the Girl Child will be observed today in Bangladesh and elsewhere across the globe to promote the progress of girls and safeguard their rights.
The day also focuses attention on the challenges girls face, like violence, education inequality and child marriage. This year’s theme, is “Digital generation, Our generation”.
Digital inclusion and literacy open new avenues to learning, earning and leading for girls, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the pandemic has also deepened the gender divide around connectivity and online safety, with girls facing economic and social barriers to internet and device access.
The International Day of the Girl Child holds the key to empowering women and girls, who represent half of the world’s population, is crucial to accelerating sustainable development.
Nations need to pledge to assist young girls to grow into empowered women, who have access to proper healthcare, skill-based learning facilities and equal opportunities in a world free from gender-based violence and discrimination.
