Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Friday said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman would go down in the country’s history as a murderer and a traitor.

“Zia’s name will remain as a traitor and a murderer in the country’s history,” he said while addressing a programme at Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex in the capital.

Hasan, also a joint general secretary, said when Ziaur Rahman was informed about the killing of then president Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he replied ‘so what, vice-president is there’.

“It is duty of the army chief and deputies to save life of the president, risking their own life, but he did not do that. Its mean he knows it very well,” he said.

“In the BBC interview, killer Farooq and Rashid claimed that Zia gave consent after hearing the killing plan of Bangabandhu. Zia said, “Go Ahead”. That’s why Zia was involved not only in the assassination of Bangabandhu but also in the assassination of Sheikh Russell,” he added.

Mentioning that children and women were not killed in Karbala battle, Hasan said that the killers did not spare even children and pregnant women on August 15, 1975.

“Not only Sheikh Russel but also four-year-old Sukanto Babu, 12-year-old Baby Serniabat, 14-year-old Arif Serniabat and pregnant Arju Moni were killed by the murderers,” he said adding that actually killers were afraid of Bangabandhu’s shadow also.

Referring to the demand of holding trail of Zia for killing thousands of army personnel, Hasan said, “A commission needs to be formed to probe the Zia-led massacre and to bring the masterminds behind the assassination of Bangabandhu to justice.”
