Defending champions Abahani Ltd Dhaka and Mohammedan Sporting Club made flying start in the Club Cup Hockey Tournament outplaying their rivals in the opening day’s matches at the Maulana Bhashani National Stadium in the capital on Thursday.

Abahani started their campaign with a massive 5-0 goals win over Police Sporting Club in the day’s second match of the tournament. After two barren quarters, Abahani captain Roman Sarker broke the deadlock from the penalty corner in the 39th minute (1-0) while national player Pushkor Khisa Mimo made the margin doubled just after one minute (2-0) of the game.

Police defence fell apart after conceding two consecutive goals. Abahani’s Shaiful Alam Shisir seized the chance and struck two more goals within a span of three minutes (50th and 53rd minutes) and made it (4-0). Arshad Hossain netted the fifth and last goal for the team to confirm the victory in the 19th minute (5-0).

In the day’s opening match, Mohammedan Sporting Club defeated Ajax Sporting Club by 8-2 goals riding on a hat-trick from Ashraful Islam at the same venue.

“I’m feeling happy that we are playing leagues. I’ve practiced hard ahead of the tournament that’s why I scored a hat-trick today. Hopefully, it will help me more day by day,” Ashraful told the media after the match, who made his hat-trick scoring five goals in the 16th, 25th, 29th, 36th and 58th minutes of the game.

Mohammedan’s Rajib Das added two in the 39th and 57th minutes while Nasir Hossain scored one in the 38th minute.

Ajax’s Sabbir Hossain and Mosharraf netted one goal each in the 32nd and 55th minutes for the team.

Sonali Bank will play against Azad SC at 2:00pm and Mariner Youngs will take on Bangladesh SC at 4:00pm today, both at the same venue.
