Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Thursday said the World Health Organization (WHO) has promised to provide all the support needed to produce Covid-19 vaccine.

“WHO has pledged to provide all the support for the production of Covid-19 vaccine. Bangladesh can export corona vaccine after fulfilling the demand of the country if the government is able to start the vaccine production,” he said.

The health minister made the statement while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Drug Addiction Treatment and Mental Health Counseling Center at South Keraniganj in Dhaka. He said the country will be able to export vaccine after fulfilling the local demand once production starts here.

Mentioning that Bangladesh has administered 80 lakh doses,  a target which is yet to be achieved by many countries, of vaccine in a day through special campaign, the minister hoped that the country will be able to break this record by the upcoming Victory Day.

He said around 3.5 crores of people have received the first dose of coronavirus vaccine while around 2 crores have been fully vaccinated.

Zahid Maleque said the coronavirus situation of the country has improved as around 90 percent of the beds dedicated to the Covid-19 patients remain vacant in many hospitals.
