Ruling Awami League has nominated its central executive committee member Marina Jahan Kabita as its candidate for Sirajganj-6 by-polls scheduled to be held on November 2.
The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the party’s parliamentary board and local government representative’s nomination board at Ganabhaban, official residence of the Prime Minister, in the capital on Thursday, said a press release.
The parliament secretariat announced Sirajganj-6 as vacant seat, following the death of former lawmaker Hasibur Rahman Swapon on September 2.
Hasibur Rahman, who also was an upazila Awami League president, won the tenth and the eleventh parliament elections from this constituency.
Marina is a daughter of former Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University Dr Mazharul Islam, who was the first director general of Bangla Academy after the War of Liberation.
Her brother Chayon Islam had also been elected lawmaker from the constituency (Sirajganj-6) in ninth parliamentary election held in 2008.
As per the schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers is October 10 while the nomination papers will be scrutinised on October 11 and the date for filing appeal has been fixed from October 12 to 14. The last date for withdrawal of candidacy is October 17.
