‘Raise awareness about danger of drugs’

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that the next successive generations would be destroyed unless it is possible to check the spread of drug.

“Currently, most of the prisoners in jail are accused of drug abuse,” he said.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Drug Addiction Treatment and Mental Health Counselling Centre (OESIS) in Dhaka’s South Keraniganj on Thursday.

The minister said that it is essential to take steps to reduce the demand for drugs, supply and rate. He said, “We all have to work together in this regard. Everyone should refrain from misuse of drugs. They should be made aware of dangers of drugs.

“Alongside heroin and yaba, terrible drug LSD is now spreading. You have already been aware how threatening this LSD is. You have also seen how a student of Dhaka University cut his own throat (following the disastrous impact of drugs on him).

“The prime minister has already adopted a policy of zero tolerance for drugs, militancy and terrorism. That is the battle we are fighting today. We must win this war. Otherwise, we won’t be able to save our future generations.”

He also called upon the guardians to monitor their children.

“When your child is addicted to drugs, ensure proper treatment for them,” he added.

Addressing the event, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed said though members of law enforcement agencies are working to end the smuggling of drugs across the border, they are not achieving the desired results.

“What law enforcement agencies are trying to do is to cut the supply of drugs. Six to seven forces are struggling to end the scourge of drugs. Customs authority is also alert at various ports,” said the IGP.
