The Election Commission (EC) will be reconstituted through search committee as tenure of the existing commission is going to expire in February, said Law Minister Anisul Huq.

“I am not speaking about violating constitutional provisions on formation of EC. The fact is that tenure of current EC will expire in February. The country is in trouble due to corona pandemic. In this situation, it is not possible to constitute EC through enactment of law” he said.

He made the statement while replying to the queries of the journalists after attending unveiling of book titled

“Swarone Sheikh Mujib: Sohosrabder Shrestha Bangali (Sheikh Mujib in the Memory: The Best Bengali of the Thousand Years” held at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) in the capital on Thursday.

“Recently, Prime Minister at press conference said clearly that EC will be reconstituted through search committee.  Earlier, search committee was formed after President had taken opinion of all political parties. The government issued gazette on search committee as all parties reached a consensus on the issue. Gazette on search committee is not law. As the gazette was based on public consensus and President’s decision, it was close to law.  I reiterate that it was not law but close to law,” he said.

Speaking on the book unveiling ceremony, law minister said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was involved in lawful politics. Bangabandhu delivered historic March 7 speech and proclaimed independence of the country within the bounds of law and after getting public mandate, he said.

After assassination of Father of the Nation along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975, the pro-killing government took state-sponsored move and wasted public fund to eliminate the name of Bangabandhu from history.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has presented the nation with Karagarer Rojnamcha (The Prison Diaries) and Oshomapto Attojiboni (Unfinished Memoirs).

“We have got scope to know Bangabandhu as the books are published,” he opined.

Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, chief coordinator of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Birth Centenary Implementation Committee, Kazi Nabil Ahmed MP, member of ULAB Trustee Board, Prof Shamsad Murtoza, acting vice-chancellor of ULAB, and Prof Imran Rahman, special adviser to Trustee Board of the university were present, among others.
