Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday said that no online news portal would be allowed to publish contents from next year before taking the registration.

“Registration would be required before publishing contents on online news portal from next year. The decision has been taken to bring discipline,” he said while speaking at a dialogue organized by Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital.

Hasan, also the joint general secretary of the Awami League, said it is necessary to take a declaration in order to publish a newspaper and this rule should also be applicable for news portals.

“So, we will take the online registration process to a standard level. We have discussed that one needs to register before publishing a news portal. Then a discipline will come here,”

he said. The government took initiative of taking registration from the government to bring all online news portals in discipline from 2020.

Talking over operation of IP TVs, the minister warned at shutting those IP TVs for airing news violating government restrictions.

“Initiative would be taken to shut those IP TVs which are airing news. Registration process is going on for IP TVs also,” he said.

Replying to a question, Hasan said broadcast of foreign channels would be started after getting clean or ad-free feed from channels.

“Cable operators informed me that the foreign television channels will send clean feeds. If they send clean feed, we will run, why didn’t they send clean feed? They are responsible for sending clean feed. Why don’t they send us clean feed if they send it to other countries? ” he asked. “We are not interested to give more time to them. Already many channels have been airing clean feed,” he said.

The minister said that the decision has been taken for the sake of the country and the whole media industry would be benefitted from it.
