The country’s domestic hockey will return to the field after three years with the Club Cup Hockey Tournament today at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium in the capital.

Mohammedan SC will play against Ajax SC in the opening match while Abahani will take on Police SC in the day’s other match.

Domestic hockey, including the premier division league, couldn’t take place since 2018 due to unexpected incidents and dissent between the clubs and federation.

Hockey League Committee Chairman DC Motijheel Abdul Ahad said that they wouldn’t give any chance to clubs or the officials to breach any codes during the upcoming competition.

“The bylaws are very specific. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also involved in it. So, we won’t allow anyone to breach the laws this time,” Ahad said in a press conference at the Bangladesh Hockey Federation office on Wednesday.

As per the bylaws, only three officials including a coach, physio and a club representative can stay with the team in the dugout during the match.

The BHF General Secretary Mohammad Yousuf said that they mightn’t get foreign players and umpires in the Club Cup.

“We are working on their visas. It may take some more time so they may not take part in this tournament. But they will be available in the premier league,” he said.

A total of eight out of 12 premier division hockey teams, split into two groups, will play in the tournament.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals on October 14 while the final will be played on October 16, all at the same venue.

Meanwhile, the premier division hockey league will start after a two-day break on October 19 at the same venue.
