Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to take stern action against those who are responsible for the delay in Kushtia Medical College and Hospital project.

Planning Minister MA Mannan told this to reporters at a press conference on Tuesday after he emerged from an Ecnec meeting which gave the nod to the second revision of the limping scheme with the PM in the chair.

“The Prime Minister has ordered that action be taken against those who are involved in irregularities of Kushtia Medical College project,” he said.  Even those who are involved in the irregularities but have already retired should be brought to book in line with the PM’s instruction, he added.

A final notice has been issued to complete the work of the project, he said, adding that the planning ministry has been tasked with taking punitive action against the people responsible.  An investigation report of IMED on the project’s irregularities was tabled at the Ecnec meeting.

The project was supposed to be complete by December 2014 at an estimated cost of Tk 2.75 billion when it was approved by Ecnec in early March 2012. But the project is not over even after repeated time extensions.

Mannan said Sheikh Hasina reiterated her call for setting up Effluent Treatment Plants and Central Effluent Treatment Plants in mills and factories to stop entry of industrial waste into the rivers.

The PM also directed the authorities concerned to carry out development work in such a way so that every part of the country develops equally. Mannan also put emphasis on dredging rivers and canals to maintain their navigability.
