Sluice gate is bane of villagers in Sylhet

SYLHET: A sluice gate is become the woe for many villagers since its inception on 2008 at Angura Mohammedpur village under the Beanibazar upazila in the district.

However, local people want to remove of this unplanned built sluice gate as they never get benefited from this instead of demerits.

This sluice gate was built for controlling water flow and facilitating irrigation in agricultural lands through Khoroscurity canals at the near of the Kushiyara river at the cost of around 2 core 90 lac taka on 2008.

Now this gate is becoming virtually useless for crop farmers and others day labours as it was closed and inoperative for four or five years long.

Meanwhile, local people alleged this sluice gate is the main reason for flash flood in the area, where many crops were damaged after built it. In this winter season local people cultivate vegetable in the canal as it was filled by earth approach of the Kushiyara river point.

According to the Sylhet Water Development Board (WDB), there are two sluice gate was built in that time on this canal, one side is in link of the Kushiyara river and another was the Surma river under the ‘Upper Surma Kushiyara Prokolpo’ for protect the 58 thousand hector of land from flash flood water.

However, who knows this sluice gate turn into woe for several villagers as it was inactive for years says many sufferer people’s in anonymity condition. After built the sluice at Koroscurity canal in front of the Kushiyara river, this lively canal become drying in day by day.

Earlier, several thousand of peoples carry their livelihood through this canal by playing boats with carry of fire wood and stones etc.

It was alleged that some local people use the canals for fish catching, often keeping the gates closed. However, concern authority ignored about this matter.

Earlier in many times local union chairman raise  this matter in the upazila administration level meeting for get remedy about this gate, but his efforts get to vain.  

Abu Taher, a local union chairman said, this gate now become bane for local peoples. He urges the concern authority to take the immediate step about this sluice gate.

Hasanuzzaman, Beanibazar upazila engineer said, about this sluice gate I hear many talk in upazila administration level meeting. But I have no power to nothing to do about this matter.

Abul Khshem Pallab, Beanibazar upazila chairman said, to remove the unplanned sluice gate at Angura Mohammedpur, we also contact with Dhaka WDB after failing any satisfactory answer from Sylhet WDB. But concern authority remain silent the chairman alleged. He also said due to the sluice gate the lively canal turn into drying.     

Shahiduzzaman, Executive Engineer of Sylhet Water Development Board said, we getting complain about this sluice gate from villagers. After visiting this area we take proper action about this sluice gate in recently.

When contact about the matter to Kazi Emdadul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet couldn’t received the phone call.
