The International Day of Non-Violence will be observed today in Bangladesh and elsewhere across the globe to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence. The theme of this year’s International Day of Non-Violence is, “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world”.
The day marks the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.
The UN General Assembly in a resolution on 15 June 2007, the United Nations General Assembly voted to make the anniversary of Mahatma Ghandi’s birthday as the International Day of Non-Violence. The UN said, the objective of the day is to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”.
