Illegal news portals to be shut gradually: Hasan

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Thursday said unauthorised online news portals will be closed gradually.

“We will shut all unauthorised news portals step by step,” he said.

The minister made the remark while unveiling the cover of a book on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s biography at his ministry in the capital.

Hasan came up with the remark after Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Tuesday kept several news sites blocked for over one-and-a-half hours.

Hasan, also a joint general secretary of the Awami League, said BTRC will block those unauthorised sites after getting lists from them.

“We are trying to provide lists to BTRC soon so that it can take action against those sites,” he said.

Replying to a question as to why BTRC has blocked government owned news agency alongside other portals, Hasan termed it a misunderstanding.

“BTRC has blocked many sites including government owned news agency due to misunderstanding. The problem has been resolved immediately. We will send a list to BTRC so that it can block all unauthorised online portals,” he said.

Mentioning that shutting online portal is a continuous process, Hasan said they will continue to close online portals that do not actually run in an honest manner, spread rumors or false news.

The minister said BTRC and they would inform the court that closing online portal an ongoing process.

“We will inform the court that it would not be logical to shut all portals whimsically, rather the unauthorized portals will be shut gradually,” he said.
