Some 3,000 residents of three slums in the capital will receive their first shots of Covid-19 vaccine today, marking the birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The dwellers of Karail slum in Banani, Sattala in Mohakhali and Bhashantek slum in Mirpur will be brought under the special vaccination programme.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Tazul Islam and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam will inaugurate the vaccination programme at Karail.

DNCC officials said the slum dwellers will be able to receive vaccine doses showing their national identity cards and the officials will ensure their registration on the spot.

They also said 1,000 residents from each of the three slums will get the vaccine in the first phase.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and DNCC have set a target to provide 1.12 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine on the occasion of the prime minister’s birthday.

DNCC will administer a total of 60,000 doses of vaccine in 54 wards. DNCC officials also said city dwellers who registered for vaccination can receive the jab during the mass inoculation programme.

DNCC Chief Health Officer Md Zobaidur Rahman said local ward councillors will oversee the vaccination activities. “We’ve already informed the councillors of the mass vaccination programme. Our vaccinators will be present in the booths from the morning,” he said.

Meanwhile, DSCC will conduct the mass inoculation campaign in 75 wards with a target to inoculate 52,500 people, said a press release.
