Cyclone ‘Gulab’ likely to bring rainfall

Under the influence of cyclonic storm ‘Gulab’, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places in the country.

“The maximum sustained wind speed within 54kms of the cyclone centre is about 62kph rising to 88kph near the cyclone centre in gusts. Sea will remain very rough near the cyclonic storm,” said Aftab Uddin, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant warning signal number two.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Dhaka, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy falls at isolated places over southern part of the country.

The cyclonic storm ‘Gulab’ over northwest bay and adjoining west central bay moved westwards further over the same area and was centred at 12 noon on Sunday about 750 kms southwest of Chattogram port, 725 kms southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 590 kms southwest of Mongla port and 605 kms Southwest of Payra port, according to BMD.

It is likely to move in a west-northwesterly direction further and cross North Andhra Pradesh - South Odisha coast of India by Sunday night, it said.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice and not to venture into the deep sea.

Meanwhile, weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country, reports BSS.

Day and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country, according to a Met Office release on Sunday.

The deep depression over East Central Bay and adjoining Northeast Bay moved westwards and intensified into a Cyclonic Storm 'GULAB' over Northwest Bay and adjoining west central Bay. It is likely to move West-Northwestards further. The axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajsthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Centre of the Cyclone to Assam across Bangladesh.

Monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.
