Nat’l goalie Asim fails to make a cut

Bangladesh national hockey team and Bangladesh Navy goalkeeper Asim Gope expressed his frustration after failing to register his name in the players’ transfer window for the upcoming Premier Division Hockey League which concluded on Thursday.

All 12 teams registered a total of 18 players each in the five-day transfer.

“If I can’t play in the league, how can I play in the national team? Besides, the national team doesn’t pay players, but the clubs pay. If I don’t play in the league, I may not continue to play in the national team,” Asim Gope told the reporters on Friday.

Asim earlier played for Mariner Young’s Club but the club released him this year. According to the bylaws, each club was allowed to recruit a maximum of five players from services teams. But no club showed interest to fill the quota with a goalkeeper.

Asim was supposed to play in Mohammedan on a service quota, but the club recruited another player instead of him.

“All positions of a team come under the quota as per the bylaws. We can’t change the rule for any special position or a player. But if any team is still interested in him, who has yet to fill the quota, can register him,” Bangladesh Hockey Federation General Secretary Mohammad Yousuf said. Another former national goalkeeper Rasel Khan Bappi also failed to register due to the same reason and coincidentally he also plays for Bangladesh Navy.
