Detectives arrested three people from Dhaka and Habiganj on Tuesday for stealing Tk24 lakh after breaking open an automated teller machine (ATM) of United Commercial Bank (UCB) in Sylhet’s Osmani Nagar area on September 12.

The arrestees are Shamim Ahmed, Nur Mohammad Shebul and Abdul

Halim.

Mohammad Harun-Ur-Rashid, Joint Police Commissioner of Detective Branch (North), told journalists that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Cyber and Special Crime Division made the arrests from different areas of the two districts.

Police seized Tk10 lakh in cash, two mobile phones, one sharp weapon, one pair of pliers and three bandanas from their possession.

The trio entered the UCB ATM booth in the early hours of September 12 and stole Tk 24.25 lakh in cash after breaking open the machine.

The police officer said the arrestees were experts in IT knowledge. Shamim Ahmed, the mastermind of the looting incident, used to watch a Indian mega serial titled ‘CID’ regularly.

After watching the serial, he learned the art of breaking the ATM machine in the ATM booth and made a plan to loot the booth. He then discussed the matter with his associates — Nur Mohammad Shebul and Abdul Halim.

According to the plan, they wearing face masks, pink clothes and caps on the head entered the ATM booth of United Commercial Bank’s (UCB) Sherpur branch with shovels and other equipment. They blur the CCTV camera at the ATM booth by spraying black paint on the lens so that their appearance cannot be seen.

At a time, they beat the security guard of the ATM booth and tied his hands and face with scotch tape. They later broke the lock and box of the ATM booth with a shovel and stole Tk 24.25 lakh.
