AL wins landslide victory in first-phase UP polls

The ruling Awami League-nominated candidates won the majority of the chairman posts in the Monday’s Union Parishad elections. 

A total of 14, 51,300 voters cast their votes while the voting percentage was 69.30 percent, according to the unofficial poll results of the UP election disclosed on Tuesday by Election Commission.

The highest voter turnout was 84.48 percent at Dakope union under Dakope upazila in Khulna and the lowest turnout 52.02 percent at Maitvanga of Sandwip upazila in Chattogram district.

The result statistics of EC showed that AL won 75 out of 113 chairman posts, while independent candidates won 36 chairman posts, and Bangladesh Workers Party won one chairman post.
