Dhaka's rail link with Chattogram was restored after around seven hours following derailment of a freight train at Tongi junction in Gazipur district on Tuesday.

Halimuzzaman, station master of Airport Rail Station, said three bogies of a Dhaka-bound goods-laden train from Chattogram veered off the tracks in the junction area around 10:30am. As a result, rail communication with Dhaka remained suspended.

He said soon after the accident, Dinajpur-bound Ekota Express was stuck at Dhaka Airport Station.

Later, the engine of the freight train was disconnected and brought to Dhaka separately, he added. Railway officials started the rescue operation around 2:15pm on Tuesday. At 2:40pm, they were joined by a relief train.

The authorities managed to restore services on Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chattogram routes at about 5:20pm.

Bogie and line slippers were damaged but no casualties were reported in the incident.
