Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tazul Islam has ordered to upgrade the LGED lab in every upazila to examine the quality of bitumen and other construction materials.

He issued the directive at a meeting held at the Local Government Division on Monday. With the minister in the chair, the meeting discussed the ways and means for ensuring procurement of quality materials including bitumen, bricks and sands for construction of roads and other infrastructures.

“There are testing labs of LGED in all upazilas, apart from mobile laboratories for on-the-spot examination of construction materials. Those have to be more effective,” the minister said.

It will be unfortunate for the country if the educational institutions, roads, bridges and culverts are not constructed with quality materials, he added.

“Even a minor problem with the construction materials can jeopardize the future of an infrastructure project,” he said, adding that quality material is a must to ensure the sustainability of the projects.

He said deputy commissioners, upazila nirbahi officers and other officials were directed to visit the construction sites and monitor the use of the materials.

The suppliers and contractors concerned will face action if substandard construction materials are used in construction projects, he cautioned. The minister said the government is working to start using environment-friendly bricks in the construction of roads and other infrastructures by 2024.

He also assured the manufacturers of eco-friendly bricks of government support.
